The US Justice Department announced on Thursday that it was reopening the 1955 murder case of Emmett Till.

The Justice Department said its renewed inquiry, which it described in a report submitted to Congress in late March, was "based upon the discovery of new information".

It was revealed this week that federal investigators have reopened its investigation of the crime that helped build momentum for the civil rights movement.

In a book published past year, researcher Timothy B. Tyson reported that the woman, Carolyn Bryant Donham said that her story was not true and did not remember the sequence of events clearly.

The federal government has recently re-opened the infamous Emmett Till case, in which a 14-year-old African-American boy was abducted and murdered for allegedly whistling at a white woman.

Two white men were previously tried on murder charges and acquitted by all-white juries, but they're both dead.

The two white men, who confessed to a magazine later that they had killed Emmett are now dead.

The decision by his mother, Mamie Till, to hold an open casket funeral, and the subsequent photographs of his mutilated body in Jet magazine helped galvanize the budding USA civil rights movement. In court, but without jurors present, she claimed that Emmett had made physical contact with her and spoken in crude, sexual language.

In her testimony at the murder trial, Bryant said that a "nigger man" grabbed her by the hand in her store and said to her, "How about a date, baby?" He says if a case were to move forward, he and the other district attorney could decide who would prosecute it.

Watts, co-founder of the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation, said it's "wonderful" her cousin's killing is getting another look but she didn't want to discuss details.

Now, the Department of Justice is re-opening an investigation into Till's death.

Donham, who turns 84 this month, now lives in North Carolina, AP reported. In 2007, at the age of 72, she granted an interview to Tyson, who was conducting research for The Blood of Emmett Till.

Images of the child's brutalized body in a casket were widely shared at the time, shining a light on racial hatred in the Deep South and invigorating the civil rights movement.

"We don't know anything".

Donham, then 21 and known as Carolyn Bryant, testified in 1955 as a prospective defence witness in the trial of Bryant and Milam. An all-white jury freed her husband and the other man even without it. Testimony indicated a woman might have been in a auto with Bryant and Milam when they abducted Till, but no one else was ever charged.

"Nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him", she said. She resisted and pulled away, but Till approached her and got her by the waist, she said.

"But perjury has a two-year statute of limitations in MS, so she's been free and clear of that since 1958 or so", Tyson said.
