Serena Williams is not focused on simply matching and breaking Margaret Court's all-time Grand Slam record - she wants to smash it.

Williams was back giving the crowd a one-arm raised victory twirl after reaching a 10th Wimbledon final when her opponent swiped a lob behind the baseline.

In September 2017, she gave birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia, an experience which she later described as life-threatening and detailed complications she faced from a pulmonary embolism and a host of surgeries to prevent blood clots spreading to her lungs.

Three hundred and fourteen days after becoming a mother, tennis champion Serena Williams earned her spot in the finals at Wimbledon.

The German attacked the biggest chink in Ostapenko's armour - her second serve, which is weak and ineffectual.

She told BBC Sport: 'It's insane, I don't even know how to feel. "I just feel like when I don't have anything to lose, I just can play so free, and that's kind of what I'm doing".

'This was not inevitable for me, I had a really hard pregnancy and I had to have multiple surgeries, I nearly didn't make it. "I'm enjoying every moment". I didn't expect to do this well in my fourth tournament back after 16 months away. "I remember I couldn't even walk to my mail box, so it's definitely not normal for me to be in a Wimbledon final".

Kerber is a former No. 1 and a two-time major champion, both coming in 2016 at the Australian Open and U.S. Open.

'But as I said in the past couple years, I don't want to limit myself.

She said: "I don't know". Instead, Kerber employed spectacular defense and solid, steady play, while letting Ostapenko determine the outcome of almost every point. After a dismal 2017 during which she won just under 55% of her matches, a credible argument can be made suggesting she's been the best player in the women's game so far this year (she is 32-12 for a much healthier 73% clip).

"This is not inevitable for me", she said. Williams broke for a 4-2 lead in the second when Goerges tried a rare drop shot that caught the top of the net tape and fell on her side. The German spent 10 hours on court en route to her first Grand Slam semifinal, the most by over two hours of any player left in the draw, and hit a tournament-leading 44 aces surpassing the 300-ace threshold for the second consecutive season. There was one brief blip to come: Williams got broken for the only time while serving for the match at 5-3.
