Seeded Roger Federer ousted in marathon Wimbledon quarterfinal

Wimbledon 2018 Federer hailed for 'perfect' cricket shot during Wimbledon win

Eighth-seed Anderson, 32, saved a match point in the 10th game of the third set and grew in confidence against an increasingly-ragged Federer who had won the first set in 26 minutes. From there, Anderson broke Federer's serve in the next game to take a 6-5 advantage and won the set 7-5 with an ace, but only after remarkably holding off three break points.

Federer, playing in the unfamiliar surroundings of Court One for the first time in three years, oozed confidence as early as the opening game when he broke Anderson's huge serve easily and then again in the ninth game before serving out the set in 26 minutes.

With Wednesday's other two quarterfinals between world No 1 Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro and three-time champion Novak Djokovic against Kei Nishikori given star billing, Federer was shunted off Wimbledon's Centre Court for the first time in three years - and 21 matches.

Anderson spurned the chance for another break when he rammed a forehand into the net and was forced to settle for a tiebreak after Federer recovered from 30-0 down in the final game of the set.

Federer served first in the seesaw battle of extra time, which ought to have put Anderson at a slight psychological disadvantage, forced to serve from behind just to stay even.

Deploying his huge serve to lethal effect, Anderson roared back to leave the champion's title bid in tatters thanks to a barrage of 28 aces and 65 winners.

"He claims that he didn't see what Nishikori has done, but apparently he always sees what I do", Djokovic said afterward, "something that I don't think is fair".

"I feel that sort of started to change towards the end of the clay court season a year ago". His last semifinal appearance at a Grand Slam was at the US Open in 2016, where he lost in the final to Stan Wawrinka.

"I just kept saying "today is going to be your day".

He said: 'I felt like in the last month and a half, the level of tennis has been very close to where I would like it to be, where I'm used to having it.

Anderson will now move into his first semi-finals at the tournament; taking on the victor of John Isner and Milos Raonic for a place in a final against what may be Rafa Nadal or Novak Djokovic.

Nadal reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon for the first time since 2011 after defeating Jiri Vesely in a 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 victory on Monday. I want to remember this match, but I also need to recover. That compared with an average of 78 percent in the third and fourth sets, providing the spine that propped up his comeback on Court 1.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion appeared to be moving towards his fifth successive Wimbledon semi-final after taking the opening two sets.

Nishikori had to survive heavy attack on his serve early in the second as Djokovic smelled blood, saving four break points, which included a 0-40 game.

It took almost five hours for the match to go final, somehow longer than Anderson's day with Federer.

"I really hope it's an example of sticking to your dreams and keep believing in yourself".
