"I played only once in first four matches on Centre Court".

Federer, 36, breezed through the opening set in just 26 minutes, had a match point in the third set and was just two points from victory a couple of times in the epic fifth set that lasted 90 minutes.

The 20-times grand slam champion blew a third-set match point before succumbing 2-6 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 6-4 13-11 to big-serving South African Kevin Anderson in a four-hour, 14-minute quarter-final thriller on Tuesday.

A delicate half-volley gave Federer the opening set in 26 minutes, but two games into the second Anderson had the initiative, snatching the first of two break points as he turned up the power, the world number two netting a backhand.

Djokovic, who has not won a major in two years, has struggled with form and injury for the past 18 months and came into Wimbledon as the No 12 seed. Anderson will take on the victor of Milos Raonic and American John Isner.

It was his first win against Federer at the fifth attempt and means he is the first player representing South Africa to reach the semi-final here since Kevin Curren in 1983.

Anderson spurned the chance for another break when he rammed a forehand into the net and was forced to settle for a tiebreak after Federer recovered from 30-0 down in the final game of the set. I think that was the key at the end.

Federer squandered his match point at 5-4 on Anderson's serve in the third set but it seemed like it would only be a matter of time before he moved into the semifinals for the 13th time.

Update: Federer not only dropped his first set, but his second as well.

While Federer's stunning loss has denied tennis fans the possibility of another blockbuster final showdown with his great rival Nadal, Anderson now has the opportunity to go one better than his charge to last year's US Open title decider.

He next faces two-time champion Rafael Nadal or fifth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro in his first Grand Slam semifinal since the 2016 U.S. Open.

'It's just not one of my best days, but they don't happen very often either.

Anderson will take on the victor of the quarter-final clash between former Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic and ninth-ranked John Isner. "Of course, it's important for me to be in these quarter-finals. Beating Roger Federer here at Wimbledon will be one I remember, especially in such a close match", Anderson said.
