Lewis Hamilton questions Ferrari 'tactics' - British Grand Prix 2018

Kimi Raikkonen accepted responsibility for the first-lap clash involving Lewis Hamilton at Formula 1's British Grand Prix, and says he deserved a penalty.

"Sebastian drove a great race, fighting like a lion despite the pain in the neck", Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene said. He acknowledged he had been concerned ahead of the race itself.

"[In the race] it wasn't necessary, I had a good feeling and the race was no problem". It doesn't matter. It held up.

But the headlines belong to Vettel, who suffered a neck injury during practice on Saturday and was forced to wear supportive tape during the race, but came through for his fourth win of the season.

Vettel moved level with Prost on 51 F1 wins, trailing only Hamilton (65) and Michael Schumacher (91). But it was not a straightforward race.

Hamilton recovered to second place while Raikkonen took third spot, having been handed a 10-second time penalty, which he served at his first pit stop.

Bottas gunned the throttle at the end of the Hangar Straight on lap 37 and kept Vettel at bay, as Raikkonen and Verstappen engaged in a fierce fight that went the way of the Red Bull.

It turned out to be the winning move: Bottas' dropped down the order late on as his tyres fell away, allowing Vettel to ease to the chequered flag.

Vettel's win for Ferrari wrecked Hamilton's hopes of taking a record fifth win in succession and a record sixth overall, but the Englishman - who was last after a collision with Kimi Raikkonen on the opening lap - produced a heroic drive to finish second for Mercedes. "Interesting tactics I would say from their side (Ferrari), but we'll do what we can to fight them". We would have done the opposite because as I said before I think both strategies had a realistic chance, it was a fifty-fifty I guess.

The Ferrari driver hit the Mercedes man on the opening lap sending the world champion into a spin.

Vettel finished 2.264 seconds ahead of Hamilton.

Montreal's Lance Stroll was 13th, finishing 38.106 back of Vettel. "Unfortunate, because Le Castellet was the first time we got taken out and now it is the second time we got taken out".

"That's how it goes sometimes".

At the time, Hamilton appeared to disagree with the decision, saying that he was struggling with tyre wear, but he backed the choice in the post race press conference.

Driving conditions were ideal under clear blue skies and temperatures well above the seasonal norms, though the heat made tire management tricky for the teams.

Then when Sauber's Marcus Ericsson skidded off with 19 laps left, Hamilton was handed another lifeline with a safety vehicle. Ericsson tried to keep DRS open through the corner, only for his auto to spear into the barrier at high speed. He was able to emerge unaided.

Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari were the big winners, while Lewis Hamilton's afternoon went awry in what was an eventful race on a sunny afternoon at Silverstone.
