Baltimore: hospital evacuated due to tuberculosis threat – reports Johns Hopkins Hospital Complex Evacuated — Hazmat Situation for Possible Tuberculosis

Two cancer research buildings on Jefferson Street were evacuated as Baltimore City fire crews assessed those who may have been exposed. The hospital confirmed there was "no risk to anyone on campus", said Kim Hoppe, a hospitals spokeswoman.

One of the world's deadliest diseases - tuberculosis - made a rare stateside appearance Thursday. "The bacteria that cause tuberculosis are spread from one person to another through tiny droplets released into the air via coughs and sneezes", according to the Mayo Clinic.

The Baltimore City Fire Department is now investigating the release of tuberculosis, which was being transported in an internal bridge connecting two cancer research buildings, according to a statement from Kim Hoppe, a spokesperson for the hospital. That same year, 9.272 cases were reported in the United States, and provisional data from 2017 found 9,093 cases.

According to the received reports, a small bottle of frozen tuberculosis sample accidentally dropped down and fell to the floor with its lid open.

Hospital officials say they believe an unspecified number of individuals were exposed to tuberculosis at the health facility at around 12:20 pm EST.

Tuberculosis is a potentially serious infectious but treatable bacterial disease. The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but it can attack other organs, like the kidneys or the brain, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Symptoms include coughing up blood, fever, chills, night sweats, shortness of breath, chest pains, weight loss and fatigue.

TB can be treated through a months-long course of antibiotics, but its hardiness and poor antibiotic management on the part of doctors and patients had enabled incredibly resistant strains to start cropping up. Two percent are extensively drug-resistant, meaning they can resist almost every available antibiotic in modern use.
