Woman climbs base of Statue of Liberty in NY

Woman Scales Statue of Liberty After Ten 'Abolish ICE' Protestors Arrested Liberty Island Evacuated As Woman Climbs Lady Liberty In Apparent Protest

National Park Service spokesman Jerry Willis told The Associated Press the individuals were taken into custody around 2:30 p.m.

US Parks Police earlier today reported the woman is scaling the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island in NY.

Police believe seven other protesters - who were also arrested Wednesday - boosted her to the base of the statue, said New York Police Lt. Michael McGuinness.

So police placed her in custody, Willis said, noting that the woman was facing multiple federal charges including trespassing and disorderly conduct.

In February previous year, protesters hung a giant "Refugees Welcome" banner across the Liberty statue's observation deck.

The news comes a week after a Wisconsin congressman introduced legislation to abolish the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency in a demand for change that has become a campaign cry for some Democrats this primary season. In particular, activists have protested against the practice of separating migrant children from their parents at the border and putting them in detention centers. "This action did not include the climber on the statue", the organization said in a tweet.

After almost four hours on the statue, the woman finally accompanied police down off the monument, tethered to them by wires.

- The 4th of July at Liberty Island was a chaotic one. Trump has said on Twitter that abolishing ICE will "never happen!"

Many are calling Therese Patricia Okoumou a hero after she climbed to the foot of the Statue of Liberty in a July 4th protest over Trump's zero tolerance immigration policy that separated children from their families.

The New York Daily News reports Okoumou is an immigrant herself, having been born and educated in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The sign read, "Abolish I.C.E".
