A study published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine says drinking coffee could lead to a longer life.

The researchers identified the half a million participants through the United Kingdom biobank, an initiative to enroll approximately 9.2 million people, with long-term follow-up, and create a large database of individual, genetic sequencing to further understand the role of DNA on disease and treatment.

Generally speaking, people who drank two to three cups of coffee every day had a lower risk of death than those who didn't.

Blood samples and detailed medical histories, including health and lifestyle questions, showed that 33% of people drank between two and three cups of coffee a day.

"Our study provides further evidence that coffee drinking can be part of a healthy diet and offers reassurance to coffee drinkers", Loftfield said.

"During the next decade, 14,225 participants died, mostly of cancer or heart disease", the AP reported.

"There are many potential beneficial compounds in coffee - there are literally hundreds and thousands of compounds in coffee", he said.

The research team plans to break down the Biobank data by coffee preparation type - pressed coffee, versus filtered coffee, for example, to see if that makes any difference to health.

So there you have it: a habit that so many of us enjoy that is suggested, once again, to actually be good for us.

While there are caveats to that claim, the new study found that a longer life was linked to any kind of coffee: instant, decaf, whatever.

In other words while coffee drinking has some benefits especially in dealing with non-communicable diseases, your genes decide how well you metabolise caffeine. But the new study suggests even higher amounts of coffee could be beneficial.

Drinking coffee could cut the risk of death even in those who struggle to metabolize caffeine, scientists believe.

For the study, researchers invited 9 million British adults to take part; 498,134 women and men aged 40 to 69 agreed.

In a study by Britain's National Cancer Institute, researchers used health data volunteered by 500,000 participants to conclude that coffee drinkers with an average age of 57 were less likely to die over the preceding 10 years.

Other studies have suggested that substances in coffee may reduce inflammation and improve how the body uses insulin, which can reduce chances for developing diabetes. "But if they don't drink coffee, these findings don't say to start drinking it", Loftfield said. Researchers noticed an inverse association between drinking coffee and the risk of death, regardless of whether individuals metabolized it quickly or slowly.

The research did not include whether participants drank coffee black or with cream and sugar.
