Hot, humid weather to continue through the week

Heat wave Heat warnings in effect - Canada News

The heat is hanging in there but take heart - it was a mere 18 C at dawn Tuesday and daytime highs will stay in the 20s by Friday.

The heat wave will finally come to an end on Thursday night but the reprieve from sweltering conditions may be short-lived, according to a senior climatologist with Environment Canada. However, the daytime highs are still expected near 30 and overnight lows in the high teens.

The national weather agency says humidex values will climb back up to 40 C or higher on Wednesday and Thursday.

Humidex values reaching 43 are expected.

The last chance for a hot weather reprieve could come on Friday when showers and temperatures close to 17 C are expected.

I think we have to be open to what might be the best combination down the line. "We're certainly going to be a lot more flexible". Why not; it's a great league to play in. "I am not surprised the way Jos has played".

Environment Canada says the current indications suggest the heat wave could continue through next week, and that it is the most significant heat event of the past few years.

"We have seen about 28 hours where the humidex value has been above 40, and that is very oppressive and sultry, nearly jungle-like humidity", he said.

The Salvation Army was out at Gore Park handing out bottles of water reminding people to heed the warnings and protect themselves, and police have already received a number of calls including one on Appleby Line and Upper Middle Road in Burlington where they rescued a dog from a hot auto where the temperature was 66 degrees.

The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.
