Samsung phone bug secretly shares your photos with rando contacts

This could be bad This could

Samsung users in the USA are reporting that their phones are sending text messages with attachments from their photo gallery to random contacts without explicit permission.

That's because posters to Reddit and the Samsung forums say Samsung Messages is malfunctioning.

"Last night around 2:30 a.m., my phone sent her my entire photo gallery over text but there was no record of it on my messages app". It also appears that the Messages app does not leave any evidence that the messages were sent, but users discovered them via their T-Mobile log. The problem was first reported by Gizmodo, and users have pointed out how their Samsung phone sent all photos from the phone's gallery to other users.

The cause of the problem isn't clear either, but a current theory is that a recent T-Mobile update that allowed for advanced texting features (like reading receipts, typing indicators, and advanced media sharing) is the glitches' source.

Samsung and T-Mobile didn't immediately reply to CNET's requests for comment.

If you have a Samsung phone this would seem to be relevant information for you.

LeBron James' decision to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers immediately raised questions about the team's future . Now he has to go through the Warriors and the Rockets in the Western Conference playoffs before the NBA Finals.

The problem isn't widespread (that we know of, yet), but rather a small number of complaints on Reddit and Samsung forums, reports Sam Rutherford over at Gizmodo.

Samsung acknowledged an inquiry from Gizmodo that it was aware of the bug and that it is now working on a fix.

As you can probably imagine, many are concerned about this issue as having your photos sent to a random contact puts your privacy at risk.

So we're asking - is this affecting you?

There's no definitive list of Samsung phone models affected yet, and the issue may be related to recent software updates pushed to phones.

In the meantime, users can switch to another text messaging app, such as Google's Android Messages, or disable access to phone storage for the Samsung Messages app.
