Collins would oppose court pick with Roe v Wade 'hostility'

Abortion rights supporters and anti-abortion activists protest outside the U.S. Supreme Court during the 44th annual March for Life Court Confirmation Process Likely to Follow Gorsuch Playbook

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy's announcement this week that he would retire from the high court at the end of next month sent shockwaves through political and legal circles, as speculation swirled about who President TrumpDonald John TrumpMike Huckabee: If Trump nominated Moses to the Supreme Court Dems would still be unhappy Trump admin likely to detain migrant families for months during immigration proceedings: report ICE chief to protesters: We're not the ones separating families MORE could tap for his replacement.

The 81-year-old will step down in July paving the way for President Trump to name his second Supreme Court justice in as many years. At one point, he said he would probably interview six or seven candidates, including possibly two this weekend.

While Trump did not make rolling back abortion rights a central plank of his campaign, numerous conservative rank and file want Roe v. Wade overturned and Trump promised to put anti-abortion justices on the Supreme Court.

The president and Senate Republicans are moving quickly to replace the retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, despite protests from Democrats.

The 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion nationwide won't be overturned automatically, nor without a fight.

"We're going to have great judges, conservative, all picked by the Federalist Society", Trump said during an interview on Breitbart News radio. She suggested she would contact Mr. Trump's assistant, but then made a decision to try to transmit the call "through signal", a reference to the White House Communications Agency, originally known as the White House Signal Corps, which provides emergency mobile communications for the president wherever he goes.

Possible nominees being eyed include Thomas Hardiman, who serves alongside Trump's sister on the Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and Raymond Kethledge, a federal appeals court judge who clerked for Kennedy.

In the run-up to selecting Gorsuch, Trump met with three contenders and White House officials vetted several more.

"That's not a question I'll be asking", he said.

When a mobile communications officer did call back and put Mr. Trump on the line, Mr. Melendez played the part of the senator, although his voice sounded nothing like Mr. Menendez's.

"I think the president's list is a very strong list".

Trump on Friday told reporters he'd narrowed his list down to five.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, one of only two Republican senators who supports abortion rights, told ABC's This Week she's looking for a nominee who would demonstrate a respect for precedent and that she sees Roe as settled law.
