Google’s next big thing might be a gaming service to take on PS4, Xbox, and Switch

Kotaku'sJason Schreier reports on five sources that say Google is looking at three areas as they explore the gaming space: A streaming platform, hardware, and bringing game developers into the Google family, either through recruiting directly to the company or acquiring entire studios themselves.
While little is known about the platform, which is code-named "Yeti", insiders share that Google has been approaching several big video game companies to gauge interest in joining a new streaming system. Not only does Google want to impress outside companies, it also wants to foster internal gaming development. Back in February, The Information also reported similarly, stating the project was codenamed Yeti.
Google is looking to offer some sort of hardware, the report claims, but it unclear whether the company will be looking towards something like the Nvidia Shield or another Android TV-style device that could be used to stream the titles and connect various peripherals.
"Imagine playing The Witcher 3 within a tab on Google Chrome", one source familiar with the Yeti platform told Giz.

Yeti, it is suggested, would be a good partner service for YouTube, as there is a wealth of walkthroughs and similar on YouTube which could be overlayed on your game in progress, for example.
This all sounds incredibly cool and game-changing; but can Google actually pull it off? According to Kotaku's sources close to the company, they're gearing up for something big. Instead of busting out your laptop when you're facing a particularly hard boss, you could theoretically overlay a guide from YouTube with the simple press of a button. Of course, this would still require a strong internet connection. There's no time-frame for when Google would launch the service, but their October "Made by Google" event would be a ideal place to launch it, though if they want to do it right we may have to wait until next year to see it after they've lined up more content creators. The streaming service would hypothetically allow you to play modern, graphics-intensive games without expensive hardware, as most of the processing work would be done remotely.
Google themselves are now not responding to requests for comment, but Kotaku points out that the search giant did snap up former Sony head Phil Harrison in January of this year.
