While this is cause for concern regardless of the specifics, Adidas says its early findings show that data accessed includes contact details, usernames, and encrypted passwords.

Adidas is working with law enforcement and data security experts to address the issue, and is alerting consumers who may have been affected, it said.

The consequences of not resetting your password after a breach include potentially giving scammers who purchase the stolen information access to your online accounts, which can include payment information or other personal details.

The disclosure marks the latest in a series of data breaches at major companies across a broad swath of industries, including retailers Hudson's Bay Co. and Under Armour Inc., aerospace giant Boeing Co., airlines like Delta Air Lines Inc. and natural gas pipelines and electric utilities. Adidas said it does not believe any credit card or health and fitness information was compromised.

Adidas revealed that the data breach occurred on June 26 with an unauthorized party managed to acquire information on millions of sportswear brand's customers from the USA website.

According to the company, they first came to know about it on Tuesday, 26th June.

Adidas said it is alerting affected customers. Immediate steps were taken to check the information and alert all the affected customers.

"Adidas is committed to the privacy and security of its consumers' personal data". Adidas noted it is carrying out a "forensic review" to ascertain more information about the breach, as well as notify its customers. USA consumers are also being notified of the issue by email.
