Indeed in parallel with the court case - and the evolving iPhone - Apple has also been working to extricate itself from its dependence on Samsung's components.

At the time, Apple alleged - in multiple individual patent suits - that Samsung copied the iPhone with their devices.

The settlement ends a patent battle that Apple has waged against Samsung since 2011 over allegations that Samsung violated Apple's patents by "slavishly" copying the design of the iPhone.

"Plaintiff Apple Inc. and Defendants Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Samsung Electronics America, Inc., and Samsung Telecommunications America, LLC would like to inform the Court that they have agreed to drop and settle their remaining claims and counterclaims in this matter". However, it did not specify the exact terms of the settlement made. Apple was awarded $539 million in May by a USA jury; prior to the award, Samsung had already paid Apple $399 million, so Samsung had an outstanding payment of $140 million, according to Reuters.

"Whereas the court has been advised by the parties that the above-entitled action has been settled, all remaining claims and counterclaims in this case are hereby dismissed with prejudice", US District Court Judge Lucy Koh wrote.

A jury convened for the original 2012 trial had determined that Samsung should pay Apple $1.05 billion. "It is important that we continue to protect the hard work and innovation of so many people at Apple".

An Apple spokesperson declined to comment on the terms of the settlement, but said Apple "cares deeply about design" and that "this case has always been about more than money".

Samsung appealed part of that award, taking its case all the way to the Supreme Court, arguing that damages should be limited since patent infringement involved only certain features. Samsung did not immediately return a request for comment. The Galaxy phones had, at first launch, implemented Apple's patent features such as tap to zoom, the home screen app grid and so on.
