North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un has returned to North Korea after a series of meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a two-day trip to Beijing.

Some lawmakers and experts said the North received a major concession - reversing decades of USA military posture in the region, with joint exercises at the heart of readiness efforts against the rogue regime - while the United States seemingly receiving nothing in return. Kim was referring to Xi's capacity as head of the Communist Party.

During the visit, Kim and Xi are reported to have reached an understanding on the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula after discussing the outcome of Kim's summit with U.S. President Donald Trump. KCNA said Kim told Xi at a welcoming banquet that North Korea-China ties are developing into "unprecedentedly special relations". It was a clear sign of the restive state's ambitions to boost its economic engagement with Beijing, analysts said.

TOKYO-The foreign ministers of Japan and the Philippines on Wednesday agreed that United Nations sanctions against North Korea need to be strictly implemented for it to take meaningful action toward denuclearization.

Shin Beom-chul, a senior fellow at the Seoul-based Asan Institute for Policy Studies, said Kim and Xi were likely seeking "common ground" following the Singapore summit.

Denmark, who left the Defense Department in 2017 and is now director of the Asia Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, said he has yet to see any indication that Kim wants to pursue denuclearization or disarmament, and instead appears to be exclusively interested in engaging the world as a nuclear power.

His reinstatement in 2013 - on the death of Kim's father, Kim Jong-il - was seen as evidence of the country's new leader's economic ambitions.

He said South Korea expects the discussions in Beijing will help move forward the process of denuclearization.

Moon, who has met with Kim twice in recent months, said the North Korean leader is willing to give up his nuclear program and focus on economic development if he's provided with a reliable security guarantee.

As well as visiting the agriculture academy, Pak visited a rail traffic control centre.

The North Korean leader told Mr Xi he would work with China on "opening a new future" on the Korean peninsula, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Koryo Tours' Simon Cockerell said that given how institutionally anti-American the DPRK is, the removal of anti-U.S. propaganda "may be the start of a real softening of rhetoric".

The Pentagon confirmed the suspension, adding in a statement there would be a meeting of the secretaries of defence and state as well as Mr Trump's national security adviser on the issue this week. The U.S. says China is in agreement on that point, although Chinese officials have repeatedly stated that sanctions should not be considered an end in themselves.
