The items targeted also include steel products and agricultural produce such as orange juice and rice.

Ms Malmstrom said: "We did not want to be in this position".

The 28-nation EU was first expected to do so only next month but EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said they would introduce "rebalancing" tariffs on about 2.8 billion euros' ($3.4 billion) worth of United States products this week.

The EU has said its retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods will kick-in from Friday - six weeks after America slapped import duties on the bloc's steel and aluminium products.

"Our response is measured, proportionate and fully in line with WTO rules".

Brussels first drew up the list in March when US President Donald Trump initially floated the idea of 25 percent tariffs on steel imports and 10 percent on aluminium. A separate 10 per cent levy is being applied to USA playing cards imported into the bloc.

Uruguay join Russian Federation in knockout stage as Egypt, Saudi Arabia crash out
The Saudi Arabia national team, now playing in the FIFA World Cup 2018, survived a scare after their plane caught fire mid-air. Saudi Arabia will face Luis Suarez and Uruguay in its next match.

Last week, the United States imposed 25% tariffs on $50bn of Chinese products, with Beijing immediately retaliating by matching the U.S. levy.

At the start of the month, the USA introduced 25 per cent tariffs on steel and 10 per cent on aluminium, with Mr Trump justifying the move as national security.

If Washington refuses to back down, a further £3.1bn (€3.6bn) worth of tariffs is also being considered by the European Commission, she said.

The action could tip the USA into another trade war, alongside the one threatened by its stand-off against China over a separate set of measures aimed against Beijing's intellectual property infractions.

In response, China accused the USA of "blackmail", raising fears of a trade war.
