Serbia Surprise: Eagles have early advantage in group play

That was to prove the only goal of a fractious and largely ho-hum affair.

Whenever Serbia played a qualifying match for the 2018 World Cup, Milinkovic-Savic was surprisingly not called up to the squad.

Here's hoping things start opening up a bit as the group stage progresses.

Bunjevcevic suited up in 16 games as defender for the national team from 1998 to 2003. But there were signs that this team wasn't quite as strong as that one: Costa Rica lost a pair of friendly matches heading into the tournament, including a 4-1 loss to Belgium.

Celebrating his 34th birthday in February, many would have forgiven former Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic for slowing down but against Costa Rica he showed no signs of doing so.

Kolarov's left-footed strike in the 56th minute against Costa Rica was one of three free kicks for goals at this World Cup - already more than the entire tournament in Brazil.

Former Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic will become Serbia's most capped global as the veteran makes his 104th appearance, overtaking Dejan Stankovic at the top of the appearances list, while Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic - who was a revelation for Fulham in the Championship during his loan spell - will lead the line for the Serbians.

Prosecutors also accused him of witness tampering, saying he also coerced the woman, which landed him in prison in December 2017 . He was released from jail on house arrest late last year and released from house arrest earlier this year to allow him to tour.

"We dedicate this win to our Director, and we want him to know that we are all supporting him", said Kolarov, referring to the 45-year-old Bunjevcevic, who assumed the post with the Serbian federation on August 2016.

With Brazil heavy favorites to win the group, which also features Switzerland, the victory delivered a potentially vital three points for Serbia and left Costa Rica in a precarious position.

Serbia's four previous World Cup victories came via scores of 1-0.

With Costa Rica proving a tough nut to crack, Kolarov stepped up to bury a 25-metre effort from wide on the right, lighting up an otherwise tight game in the southern Russian city of Samara.

With five minutes of the second half gone, only a good save by Navas prevented Mitrovic from opening the scoring after a clipped pass from Milinkovic-Savic, although the striker should have done better.

That took the sting from a lot of Costa Rica's play and Arsenal's Joel Campbell was sent on to enliven their attack.
