Portuguese airport replaces infamous Cristiano Ronaldo bust

Madeira Airport already has a new bust of Cristiano Ronaldo Ridiculed Ronaldo statue replaced by new model at Madeira Airport

Portuguese president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, left, Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa, 2nd left and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldostand next to a bust of the player at the Madeira worldwide airport outside Funchal, the capital of Madeira island, Portugal, Wednesday March 29, 2017.

However, as soon as the bust was unveiled it went viral on social media and faced widespread ridicule and criticism as it hardly resembled the dashing personality of the football superstar.

It was replaced Friday at the request of Ronaldo's family, according to the Diário de Notícias Madeira newspaper.

The bust, created by sculptor Emanuel Santos, was greeted by howls of derision in March a year ago and prompted unflattering comparisons with the likes of Niall Quinn and Art Attack's The Head.

The new version boasts a better likeness to the star, who was born and raised on the archipelago.

The infamous bust of Cristiano Ronaldo at Madeira Airport has been replaced, but an online petition has been launched to have the original brought back.

It took over a year, but the airport is finally the home of a statue that actually looks like Ronaldo.

The petition has already been signed by over 300 people.

The switch took place on the same day that Ronaldo, 33, scored a hat-trick against Spain in Portugal's World Cup opener in Russian Federation.
