Professor Stephen Hawking's ashes are being buried in Westminster Abbey. Tribute speeches and readings were given by Nobel prize victor Kip Thorne, paralyzed disability advocate Tom Nabarro, British astronaut Tim Peake, actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who played Hawking in the BBC film Hawking, Astronomer Royal Martin Rees, and Lucy Hawking.

Greek composer Vangelis - most famous for his Academy Award-winning score to "Chariots of Fire" - set Hawking's voice to an original piece of music, which was sent into space through a massive antenna at European Space Agency's ground station in Spain.

Around 1,000 members of the public, selected by a ballot, will join Hawking's family for the service. Professor Hawking's first wife, Jane, read a prayer, as did his daughter Lucy - an alumna of Newnham College. With his distinctive voice, Hawking's breakthrough observations on black holes and his advocacy of science were recognizable and popular with the public.

The publication also reminds readers that Hawking once had a party for time travellers who never showed up.

The wheelchair-bound professor, who dedicated his life's work to unravelling the mysteries of the universe and fought to overcome his disability, will be buried by the graves of fellow science greats Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin.

But at the same time his ashes were lowered into the ground, his voice was beamed from Earth thousands of light-years away toward the nearest known black hole in the universe.

Hawking, who died at 76 after a lifelong battle against terminal motor neuron disease, was a groundbreaking physicist and mathematician.

An address will be given by Astronomer Royal Martin Rees, while Prof Hawking's collaborator and Nobel prize victor Kip Thorne will give a tribute.

"We are so grateful to Westminster Abbey for offering us the privilege of a service of thanksgiving for the extraordinary life of our father and for giving him such a distinguished final resting place", said his children Lucy, Robert and Tim. They evaporate over billions and billions of years by emitting Hawking radiation - named for the late physicist, of course.

Hawking was also a pop culture icon, appearing in several TV series playing himself, including "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and American cartoon sitcom "The Simpsons".

Cumberbatch, quoting Wisdom 7: 15-24, said, "For it is he who gave me unerring knowledge of what exists, to know the structure of the world and the activity of the elements'".
