Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt may need to resign amid reports that he used an agency aide to help look for a job for his wife and leased an affordable condo from an energy lobbyist's wife, Republican Senator Jim Inhofe, a longtime friend of Pruitt's, said Wednesday.

An early backer of Pruitt's, Inhofe noted in his interview with Ingraham that EPA Deputy Administrator Andrew Wheeler, who was recently confirmed by the Senate, was fully qualified to carry out President Trump's agenda.

Ingraham's call for Pruitt to be replaced as EPA chief also marked one of the first times a key member of the conservative press has broken publicly from supporting him, even amid the scandals surrounding him.

The Washington Post reported that he had a top aide help contact Republican donors who might offer his wife a job, eventually securing her a position at a conservative political group - the Judicial Crisis Network - that has backed him for years.

"As I came to South Dakota, there were a few billboards greeting me, and they didn't say 'I hope you're having fun, '" Pruitt said.

The conservative publication National Review on Wednesday published an editorial titled, "Scott Pruitt Should Go".

Johnson said he appreciated Pruitt's philosophy to limit government regulation but said the position on biofuels needed change. Pruitt has been the EPA Administrator since February 2017.

Inhofe made clear to reporters in the Capitol on Wednesday that he was "absolutely not" calling for Pruitt to resign.

A spokeswoman for Inhofe later told Reuters that while the senator is not ready to call for resignation, "he has concerns about the reports coming out and wants to hear directly from Pruitt" in a hearing. The EPA head said petitions have been lodged asking the agency to revisit the finding, calling its passage in 2009 a "breach of process". "So that's what we've seen, is a spike in applications". "From the Renewable Fuel Standard to the so-called 'Clean Power Plan, ' we are working hard to fulfill the agency's true mission while providing certainty to stakeholders in South Dakota and across the country". "I'm sending a communication over today that we've had enough of these things and you need to get down and do the job we're elected to do".

"A spike? That's more than a spike".

Those ads reportedly were set to air in South Dakota and Nebraska, both of which were states Pruitt was reportedly set to visit this week, according to The Washington Post.
