Is Your Workplace Making You Fat?

Stephen Onufrak, epidemiologist at the CDC and lead author of the study said that this is the first national study to be conducted in order to look at the food people get at the workplace.

Angela Amico, who is a policy associate at the Center for Science in the Public Interest and has no contribution in the study, said, "Unfortunately, the diets of Americans, in general, is not really consistent with the recommendations from the US Dietary Guidelines for Americans". Whether it's your co-workers bringing in bagels on Fridays, donuts for someone's birthday, or just a vending machine craving in the afternoon - food is somehow inescapable at the office.

"Free food accounted for 71 percent of all calories acquired at work", Onufrak's team wrote in a summary of their work.

The food people get at work contributes to unhealthy eating as it tends to contain high amounts of sodium and refined grains, and very little whole grains and fruit, a U.S. study has found.

TUESDAY, June 12, 2018 (HealthDay News) - Many working Americans obtain food and beverages from work, and these foods often do not align with dietary guidelines, according to a study presented during Nutrition 2018, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition, held from June 9 to 12 in Boston. Researchers found that a quarter of these employees, most of whom were college graduates, women and non-Hispanic whites, did get food and beverages at work.

Employees reported items like pizza, soda, cookies, brownies, cake, and candy being made available at work. And how much calories are they exactly consuming?

The study used data from the US Department of Agriculture Food Acquisition and Purchasing Survey (FoodAPS), a nationally representative household survey on food purchases and acquisitions during a seven-day study period.

The study also found that free food was the most common source of food for people at work.

When employees spend more than half of their waking hours in the workplace, they are pushed to pick unhealthy foods and the empty calories quickly add up, Amico noted.

According to this new survey, about one-quarter of American worker bees eat almost 1,300 calories at work per week and many of those calories are rich in fat and sugar.

Listing calories, and nutritional content, on vending machine and cafeteria items could also help deter employees from eating some unhealthier items.

"Along with just offering those foods, they can promote them, make them attractive, delicious, priced competitively with less healthy foods, highlight them on menus, and put them in a prominent place", Onufrak said.

The researchers suggest workplaces should play more of a role to help ensure access to and promote healthier food options.
