United Nations resolution condemning Israel passes over USA objections

The U.N. General Assembly condemned Israel on Wednesday for excessive use of force against Palestinian civilians and asked U.N. chief Antonio Guterres to recommend an "international protection mechanism" for occupied Palestinian territory.

The Palestinians and their supporters chose to go to the 193-member assembly, where there are no vetoes, after the US vetoed virtually the same resolution in the Security Council on June 1.

USA ambassador Nikki Haley attempted to include an amendment that would have condemned Hamas, which failed after several procedural votes. It was adopted at an emergency special session, and introduced by Algeria, Turkey and the Palestinians.

Speaking to the Israeli newspaper Maariv, General Eisenberg said "the expected facilitations for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip will not change anything".

"But the common practice of turning a blind eye to the U.N.'s anti-Israel bias is changing", she said. Speaking from the floor, US Ambassador Nikki Haley countered that "denying a vote on the US amendment would be the height of this body's hypocrisy".

Kushner and Greenblatt also have laid the blame for violence on Israel's border with the Gaza Strip exclusively on Hamas, the terrorist group that controls Gaza.

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley speaks in favor of an amendment condemning Hamas during a General Assembly debate.

"We had more countries on the right side than the wrong side", Haley said.

The General Assembly vote on Wednesday garnered fewer votes in favor than a similar one in December that rejected President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

"It is despicable for any country to even consider to vote for a resolution condemning Israel while refusing to support the condemnation of Hamas", he said. The vote was 128 to 9, with 35 abstentions.

The U.S.' support for Israel during the recent uptick in violence on the Gaza-Israel border has been criticized by many human rights groups.

The resolution deplores "any excessive use of force" by Israeli forces, particularly in Gaza, and demands that Israel "refrain from such actions".

Brett Bruen, a former Obama administration official and president of Global Situation Room, told CBS News at the United Nations on Wednesday that USA actions in the Middle East are "costly for Israel, which has grown further isolated" as the US irritates allies and emboldens adversaries.

The resolution is unlikely to lead to any action against Israel because the United States, a close ally of the nation, would veto it.

The resolution condemned the "firing of rockets from the Gaza Strip against Israeli civilian areas", which have increased following clashes, and requested the United Nations secretary general submit a written response regarding the safety of the Palestinian civilian population.

Israel's ambassador accused "anti-Israel elements" of blocking condemnation of Hamas.

"I do not think that we will see any change at the moment and therefore we must show more resolve, because in the end we are facing Hamas, the hostile organisation that does not recognise Israel", he said adding that any facilitations or changes in the nature of the humanitarian situation in Gaza will not change the nature of the hard reality there.
