Net neutrality officially ends today

Net Neutrality Ends Today, But The Fight To Protect Internet Speeds Rages On Net neutrality rule ends Monday
Troy Mann | 14 June, 2018, 00:32

Net neutrality rules which prevented broadband providers from discriminating against certain websites have been officially rolled back in the U.S., even as opposition groups fight to save the regulations.

The Federal Communications Commission's repeal of the net neutrality rules took effect today, leaving broadband providers in most states free to censor sites and slow down apps.

The rules oblige Internet service providers, or ISPs, to enable access of all content and applications, regardless of the source, and without favoring or blocking particular products or websites. To commemorate the occasion, FCC chairman Ajit Pai - the man mainly responsible for the repeal of Net Neutrality - penned an op-ed piece for CNET in which he champions the dissolution of internet regulations. Are you saying they want to more explicitly offer bundles that include preferred services? The repeal will also let ISPs charge websites or online services for priority access to consumers.

Comcast Corp (CMCSA.O), Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N) and AT&T Inc (T.N) have pledged to not block or discriminate against legal content after the rules expire. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai continues to suggest that Obama-era rules were "heavy-handed" and they negatively impacted innovation. "Their wisest course of action will be to eliminate net neutrality like a slow drip over time in the hope that consumers won't notice and will stop caring".

You might consider investing in a zero-rating plan, also called sponsored data plans, which allow customers to access a specific service without using data. Others, including the governors of Montana and NY, used executive orders to force net neutrality. Last month, the Senate passed a last-ditch effort to overturn the FCC's repeal, but it never progressed to a House vote and was officially repealed Monday. Politicians on the local and federal levels are working to reinstate the net neutrality rules.

Big changes could be headed to the internet industry as net neutrality becomes a policy of the past.

Those might sound the same, but in practice they're very, very different.

"The FCC will not have the last word when it comes to net neutrality, the American people will", he said.

Whether you're trying to buy a necklace on Etsy, stream a series on Netflix, or upload a photo to Facebook, your internet service provider has to load all of those websites equally quickly.

Pai attempted to bolster the FCC's decision through claims that the new regulations introduces stronger transparency laws and hence more protection for the consumer.

Hey, remember when there was all of that hubbub about the FCC vote that killed net neutrality?

For now, we are in a wait and see mode to see what happens next.

A spokeswoman for the FCC previously directed CNNMoney to a section of the final order for net neutrality, in which the FCC asserts authority to prevent states from pursuing laws inconsistent with the net neutrality repeal. Essentially, users and consumers of the internet will not be charged more for faster or better speeds, instead, the accessible quality and quantity of the internet will be the same for everyone.
