A raccoon scurries up the side of the UBS Tower in St. Paul, Minn., on Tuesday, June 12, 2018.

Later Wednesday morning, MPR reporter Tim Nelson confirmed the traps succeeded in capturing the raccoon.

After an exhausting ordeal, MPR Raccoon was set free in the wild, with vision of the release clocking up more than 55,000 views just three hours after being posted to the Wildlife Management Services Facebook page.

By Tuesday afternoon, it was up to the 23rd floor.

On Twitter, they're calling #MPRraccoon "The hero we never knew we needed".

The adventure started on Monday when, according to one local reporter the raccoon got stranded, "likely on an errant mission to raid pigeon nests".

Apparently, live traps have been put on the roof of the building in hopes the animal, which has gained quite the social media following, will make it up there.

Animal stuck on high-rise ledge becomes social media star

It captivated onlookers and generated huge interest on social media after it started scaling an office building.

The raccoon was first spotted on a ledge Tuesday morning.

An effort to build a makeshift ramp for it to climb down didn't work and the spooked raccoon instead made its way to the UBS Tower and began going up.

The building's windows don't open, so assistance won't be easy.

"It's in good condition", she said. At 2:48 a.m. Wednesday, the #MPRraccoon successfully reached the roof of the UBS Tower, and entered a live trap to enjoy a delicious and well-deserved meal.

The masked animal did so by scaling a St. Paul, Minnesota, skyscraper, a la Spider-Man, and in the process riveting - and terrifying - legions of humans who followed online. People had songs for the raccoon (to the tune of AC/DC).

The incident even prompted James Gunn, director of the film Guardians of the Galaxy (which features a heroic racoon as one of its main characters) to offer US$1,000 to anyone who would rescue the critter.
