President Donald Trump said he didn't like using harsh rhetoric against Kim Jong Un, but he said it helped set the table for his historic meeting with the North Korean leader.

Trump, who said that human rights did come up during the talks and that he would hold further conversations on the subject in the future, was responding to a journalist who asked how he could feel so comfortable calling Kim "talented" when the North Korean leader had had some of his own family members killed, starved his own people, and was responsible for Warmbier's death.

"Today I assured his dad, as the president said two days ago, their beloved son, Otto Warmbier, will not have died in vain", Pence said.

That's a solid turnaround for him since a CNN poll last November showed 35% approval of Trump's handling of North Korea.

'Otto Warmbier is a very special person and he will be for a long time in my life.

"But again, as we learn from the past, North Korea will agree to take these steps, but you can't trust them ultimately to fulfill what they commit to", he said.

The summit between the two leaders occurred on Monday evening United States time and Tuesday in Singapore, ending with Trump and Kim vowing to "denuke" North Korea. According to current reports, it ended amicably with the two shaking hands and smiling, though details of their plan still need to be hashed out.

China suggested Tuesday that the U.N. Security Council consider suspending or lifting sanctions against North Korea if the country is in compliance with U.N. resolutions and making progress in diplomatic negotiations.

Many experts remained sceptical that Kim will ever give up his nuclear weapons, even though Trump insisted the process of denuclearisation will start "very, very quickly".

He had been imprisoned in North Korea beginning in January 2016 after being sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for trying to steal a poster bearing a propaganda slogan from his hotel, North Korea state media said.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted that the USA negotiating team "delivers for America's swagger".

Cindy and her husband Fred Warmbier have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against North Korea, saying its government tortured and killed their son. "I got that after we signed the agreement", the president told reporters. Sometimes I felt foolish doing it.
