The report also said Mr Kim was accompanied by his foreign minister Ri Yong Ho, defence minister No Kwang Chol and sister Ms Kim Yo Jong.

Authorities have beefed up security around the hotels where Trump and Kim (Saint Regis) will be staying in central Singapore.

The key players have arrived, with North Korea's Kim Jong-un touching down Sunday after his longest plane journey since taking power.

"I think things can work out very nicely", Trump said briefly of Tuesday's summit, before a lunch with Singapore's prime minister Lee Hsien Loong.

But if they don't, we'll know who to blame: not Trump's lack of preparation, but our neighbor to the north.

Besides, Singapore's prime minister "wished Chairman Kim success for the US-DPRK Summit and expressed hope that the US-DPRK meeting will advance the prospects for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and the larger region".

Kim's summit with Trump has captured intense global attention after a turn to diplomacy in recent months after serious fears of war a year ago amid North Korean nuclear and missile tests.

But many, if not all analysts, say that this is highly unlikely, given how hard it has been for Mr Kim to build his program and that the weapons are seen as the major guarantee to his unchecked power.

North Korea had also threatened to strike Guam, an American territory in the Pacific Ocean. Kim is, essentially, upsetting two decades of carefully choreographed North Korean statecraft and stepping into the unknown.

Meanwhile, U.S. and North Korean officials huddled at the Ritz-Carlton hotel Monday ahead of the sit-down aimed at resolving a standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal.

During his meeting, Trump was presented with an early birthday cake.

But last month, Trump abruptly cancelled the Singapore summit, citing the "tremendous anger and open hostility" by Pyongyang.

Commenting for the first time on the agenda, North Korea's state-run KCNA news agency said the two sides would exchange "wide-ranging and profound views" to re-set relations.

Ahead of his much-anticipated meeting with Kim, the US President sounded optimistic and said the meeting would be a "one-time shot" at peace.

"The underlying driver is a transformational process of Kim Jong-un leading North Korea into a new place in the region and the world", said John Delury, a professor of Chinese studies at Yonsei University in Seoul. And he won't have that opportunity again.

They are scheduled to meet on Tuesday on the resort island of Sentosa.

"I am on my way to Singapore where we have a chance to achieve a truly wonderful result for North Korea and the World", Trump wrote in a pair of tweets.

"I think that was a very shrewd move on Kim Jong Un's part", Terry said.

The summit provides "an unprecedented opportunity to change the trajectory of our relationship and bring peace and prosperity" to North Korea, Pompeo told a news conference on the eve of the summit.

Kim is due to meet Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong later on Sunday, Singapore's ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement.

Observers in the region warn that ultimatums over denuclearization could make military confrontation between the US and North Korea even more likely, a situation Zhao Hai from China's Academy of Social Sciences described as a "down-spiral of security" that could turn into a nuclear "nightmare".
