Trump split with G7 allies because Kim ‘must not see weakness’

Donald Trump withdraws endorsement of G7 joint statement, slams Trudeau Trump says US not to endorse G7 communique

The photo of an isolated Donald Trump seemingly being chided by global leaders at the G7 summit has swept the world, hours after the US President dashed hopes of a consensus on trade by calling the Canadian Prime Minister "very dishonest and weak".

A subsequent visit in April this year warranted only a working lunch for the German leader, several days after fellow European Union leader Mr Macron got the full, formal state dinner treatment from Mr Trump.

Trump angered his G7 allies last week by slapping them with hefty tariffs on steel and aluminum - a move that prompted Canada and the European Union to threaten duties of their own.

Trudeau did not immediately respond to the attacks, but his office said on Saturday after Trump withdrew support for the communique that the prime minister had not said anything in his closing news conference he has not said to Trump before.

The two-day summit in Canada has been marred by a tit-for-tat exchanges of hostile tweets, with USA trading partners furious over Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, the European Union and Mexico as part of his "America First" agenda.

But Mr Trump had already said he would not hesitate to shut countries out of the United States market if they retaliate against his tariffs.

"The New York Times notes that in a press conference Saturday afternoon, ".Mr. Trudeau said the seven nations had reached broad agreements on a range of economic and foreign policy goals.

Charest said if he does follow through on autos, it "will be a catastrophe", citing that 22 per cent of the cars sold in the US past year were exported from Canada.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said it was wrong for Trump to pull out of the joint G7 communique that would have showed solidarity with America's best allies.

Morneau said that during the G7, Canadian officials had the opportunity to present Trump and his team some numbers that Morneau described as indicative of how trade works between the two countries.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Speaking on "Fox News Sunday", White House trade adviser Peter Navarro echoed Kudlow's comments and said Trudeau's post-conference comments were in bad faith.

The statement that Trump reneged on was also signed by the heads of government of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan, all of which have also been hit by the United States tariffs of 25 percent on imported steel and 10 percent on aluminum.

Trump had roiled the G-7 summit with his insults and threats toward Canada and Europe and with his call for Russian Federation to be invited back into the group.

He added: "PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, "US Tariffs were kind of insulting" and he "will not be pushed around".

Looking for news you can trust? "That's the way it should be", Trump said, demanding the U.S.'s top trading partners end all tariffs.

On Twitter, Mr. Trump called his remarks "very dishonest and weak", citing Canada's imposition of tariffs on dairy products.

Democrats contended on Sunday that Trump's actions and comments harmed long-standing relationships with US allies.

"In a matter of seconds, you can destroy trust with 280 Twitter characters", German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said when asked about Trump's U-turn, adding it would take much longer to rebuild lost trust.
