The 'trend' that is troubling the US

US suicide rate on rise: health agency Suicide Rates Increase in Nearly All States
Herman Weaver | 10 June, 2018, 22:42

Dr. Christine Moutier, a psychiatrist and chief medical officer for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, said Friday it's important for everyone to know the warning signs and to intervene when family members, friends or co-workers appear troubled.

Staley said although he wasn't surprised by the numbers in the new CDC report, suicide death rates appear to have held steady in most recent years.

Despite the steadiness of the suicide rate in the state, Allen says there is a lot of work to do.

In North Dakota, the suicide rate increased by nearly 58 percent from 1999 to 2016, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Arizona's rate rose 17 percent during that period.

However, there was an increase found in all but one state: Nevada. The suicide growth rate in Florida went up 10.6 percent - among the smallest increases in the nation.

In 2016, the population group at the highest risk for suicide was 45 to 54, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"These findings are disturbing", Schuchat says.

Rates of increase varied.

The report said people without known mental health problems were more likely to die by firearms than those with known mental health problems. Almost half (42 percent) turn to suicide at least partly due to relationship problems.

In 2016 alone, about 45,000 lives were lost to suicide.

The CDC said suicides were rarely caused by any single issue.

Keltz believes talking about mental health and suicide will help erase the stigma associated with it.

"Relationship problems or loss, substance misuse; physical health problems; and job, money, legal or housing stress often contributed to risk for suicide", the CDC explained in its report.

The organization said that suicide is the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 15 to 29; while close to 800,000 people die by suicide every year worldwide.

The new CDC report states half of the country has seen a more than 30 percent increase in suicide rates since 1999. In the one-year analysis of 27 states, opioids were found in 31 percent of the 3,003 suicides involving drug overdoses.

If you or anyone you know may be thinking about suicide or is struggling with a crisis of any kind please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
