Red Bull continued to suffer from lack of speed down the straights as they tried to put the pressure on Ferrari, but Vettel finished the session by knocking 12 milliseconds off his own best time.

Mercedes' championship leader Lewis Hamilton, chasing a record equalling seventh Canadian Grand Prix win, was fourth best ahead of his Ferrari championship rival Sebastian Vettel and team mate Valtteri Bottas.

"In my final lap I had a small mistake otherwise I think there was a little bit more. I quickly saw that it was going to be hard to take pole position but you always do your best and try to get the best out of the auto".

Vettel powered his Ferrari around the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in one minute 10.776 seconds.

Mercedes offered Hamilton the option of turning down his engine in the closing laps, but he declined, pressuring Ricciardo and getting to within a second of the Red Bull.

Vettel was never threatened from pole, leading easily off the line and nailing his sole pit stop to ensure he cruised past the checkered flag first.

"He left a heritage for people who fell in love with motorsport back then, it's still them hanging around, and their kids and maybe their grandkids, I don't know!"

"I think he's pretty headstrong; he won't let it get to him too much", said the Australian, who won in Monaco and now sits in third place, 38 points behind Hamilton, in the standings. He was on the back foot when the race began, having started from fourth on the grid.

Lap one was eventful, as Canadian Lance Stroll lost control of his Williams, sandwiching Toro Rosso's Brendon Hartley between himself and the wall.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner has hinted that Red Bull Racing is ready to take a gamble on Honda power units for the 2019 Formula 1 season, with a decision set to be made before the Austrian Grand. "But it showed in Monaco that we have a great vehicle".

"I need to look into it to see exactly what it is, but there was a good chunk of time there, definitely in that corner alone there was pole position for sure if I'd figured out how to fix it".

"We got pole today for a reason", said Vettel.

Australian Daniel Ricciardo, victorious in Monaco two weeks ago, was sixth in the second Red Bull as his team-mate Verstappen, who had been fastest throughout practice, continued to deliver a flawless riposte to his critics.

The Finn said: "That was close, very close".
