One US Soldier Killed, Four Injured in Attack in Somalia US military service member killed in Somalia attack

Four other United States service members were wounded when the team came under attack by mortars and small arms from unknown insurgent forces in the area.

The extent to which USA troops are assisting behind the scenes or fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with local troops has become a point of contention, not only in Somalia but also in other parts of the world where US forces are helping fight extremist groups by backing proxy forces.

An American special operations soldier was killed and four U.S. service members were wounded Friday in an "enemy attack", according to U.S. Africa Command.

Friday's incident marked the first time a USA service member has died in action in Somalia since Navy SEAL Kyle Milliken, a senior chief petty officer, was killed in May of past year in a firefight with al-Shabab militants.

The Americans were working in cooperation with local partner forces when they were attacked.

US Africa Command says in a statement that US troops with Somalian and Kenyan forces came under mortar and small-arms fire Friday in Jubaland, Somalia, at around 2.45 p.m. local time.

A US service member has been killed and four others injured in Somalia, the USA military confirmed Friday. Since the Niger ambush, Special Forces teams have had their hands tied and wings clipped according to SOFREP sources who stated that they were hardly able to leave their bases anymore.

Ghani Announces Temporary Truce With Afghan Taliban
He has urged ceasefires with the Taliban before, but this was the first unconditional offer since his election in 2014. The worldwide military presence in the country has also indicated that it will honour the pause in fighting.

"We have increased the firepower; we've increased the ISR [intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance] capacity; we've increased various response times", Marine Gen. Thomas Waldhauser, head of AFRICOM, told reporters on May 10.

The attack also comes a little over a year since an early May, 2017 raid on an al-Shabaab compound that went awry, resulting in the death of one US Navy SEAL and injuries to two others. It was unclear whether all 800 US, Kenyan and Somali troops were present when the attack took place.

Since 2007, Al-Shabaab has been fighting to overthrow the internationally backed government in Somalia.

Four U.S. service members were killed in a militant ambush in the west African nation of Niger in October.

This is the second USA military member to be killed in Somalia since the 1993 Black Hawk down incident that resulted in the deaths of 18 American soldiers. Afterward, Africa Command revisited the protection that USA troops in Africa on operations.

The terrorist group al-Shabaab, the local al-Qaeda affiliate, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
