CDC: Suicide Rates Rising Across US
09 June, 2018, 10:12
Suicide rates have increased in almost every USA state, including New Jersey, between 1999 and 2016, according to newly released data by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CDC report shows a little more than half of the people who died by suicide between 1999 and 2016 didn't have a known mental health condition.
"When you talk to them and they seem exhausted", Stamper said. Combined, Minnesota's rate grew to 15 suicides per 100,000 residents.
And while media reactions to high-profile celebrity deaths often increase the awareness of suicide and crisis hotlines, these tools alone are not enough. California had an increase of 14.8 percent - the fifth-smallest, after Delaware, Maryland, Florida and North Carolina. Only Nevada did not record a rise.
Among those who committed suicide and who had known mental health conditions, 67.2% had a history of treatment for mental health or substance abuse conditions, and 54 percent were in treatment at the time of their suicide.
- New figures show Minnesota's suicide rate has jumped in recent years. Kansas saw a 45 percent increase in the number of people who took their own lives over the past 17 years. The CDC said firearms are the most common methods of suicide. 3.
"There's been an increasing awareness of helping people in the restaurant business deal with depression, drugs and alcohol, and suicide", Fuller said.

"Frankly, we need to start championing mental health, just like we championed cancer and AIDS years ago", Alice Jordan-Miles from the Indiana Suicide Prevention Coalition explained. They also looked at data from its National Violent Death Reporting System which covers 27 states to gain a fuller picture of the circumstances surrounding the suicides.
Montana had the highest suicide rate of any state during 2014-16, at 29.2, nearly twice as much as Minnesota's.
Looking at CDC figures from 2014, suicide is the second leading cause of death among those aged 10-34.
But the hope in knowing that so numerous millions of Americans who struggle with mental health issues go on to recovery can seem hard to focus on amid tragedies such as this week's public deaths of designer Kate Spade and celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, said office director Sarah Brummett. Men were also more likely to kill themselves than women in those month, comprising 52 out of the 60 cases.
"We know that prevention programs work and can be effective in reducing this tragedy", Shuchat said. "In places where exposure to guns is higher, morepeopledie of suicide". That indicates a large portion weren't diagnosed, "which suggests to me that they're not getting the help they need", he said. "We were in touch with her the night before and she sounded happy", Andy Spade's statement said, in part.
"Cheer up, people care about you" or "do something nice for yourself" or "go for a run, you'll feel better" doesn't help, because depression tells you that people don't really care about you, that you don't deserve anything nice, and that nothing will make you feel better.
