Chinese hackers stole huge amounts of highly sensitive data from a Navy contractor, according to a report by the Washington Post.

Chinese government hackers breached the files of a U.S. Navy contractor to steal submarine warfare secrets earlier this year, The Washington Post reported Friday.

It said the stolen information amounted to 614 gigabytes of material, including secret plans to develop a supersonic anti-ship missile for use on US submarines by 2020.

The breaches took place in January and February.

The hackers targeted the contractor who works for the Naval Undersea Warfare Centre - a military organisation headquartered in Rhode Island's Newport city. Bill Speaks was quoted as telling the Post.

However, he also said that it would be "inappropriate" to add any more details.

US officials believe China has for years carried out hacking attacks on the USA military, the USA government and US companies. According to the investigators, the operatives of the Chinese Ministry of State Security also obtained the Navy's submarine development unit library, which offers a glimpse into hundreds of mechanical and software systems used by the Navy.

At the Navy's request, the Post withheld information about the compromised new missile system, but said it was for a supersonic anti-ship missile that could be launched from submarines. The latter remains secretive: The only information released by the DoD is that it will integrate an existing weapon system with an existing Navy platform.

"U.S. naval forces are going to have a really hard time operating in that area, except for submarines, because the Chinese don't have a lot of anti-submarine warfare capability", Bryan Clark, a naval analyst at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, told the Post.

One of the main concerns that we have is cyber and penetration of the dot-com networks, exploiting technology from our defense contractors, in some instances, ' Adm. Philip S. Davidson said during his April nomination hearing to lead U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.

The Navy and the FBI are investigating the breach.
