President Trump said Friday that he is considering a posthumous pardon to boxing legend Muhammad Ali, who was convicted of dodging conscription during the Vietnam War.

Ali was convicted of draft evasion in 1967 after he refused to refused to fight in the Vietnam War.

He lost his boxing licence because of the fallout and was not allowed to return to the ring until 1970.

The U.S. Supreme Court threw out that conviction four years later, so it's unclear why Trump would offer a pardon to the former heavyweight and Olympic champ.

Trump Grants Alice Marie Johnson Clemency After Kim Kardashian’s White House Visit
She said she turned her life around in prison and decided that she wasn't "going to just do time or let time do me". Trump recently pardoned conservative commentator Dinesh D'Souza, who was convicted of a campaign finance violation.

Trump told reporters as he left the White House on Friday for a meeting with in Canada with US allies that he's looking at "thousands of names" of people who could be granted clemency.

"We appreciate President Trump's sentiment, but a pardon is unnecessary", Ron Tweel said in a statement. "I'm thinking about that very seriously, and some others". There's a slight problem with pardoning Ali though: His conviction was already thrown out.

He famously said, "I ain't got no quarrel with them Vietcong". He then floated Ali's name, despite the fact that the late boxer's conviction for draft evasion was overturned almost 50 years ago.

Earlier this week, he also commuted the life sentence of a woman whose cause was championed by Kim Kardashian West. I understand that. I'm going to ask them to recommend to me people that were unfairly treated. Last week, the president said he was considering pardoning Martha Stewart and commuting the sentence of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
