President Trump said Friday that he's thinking about pardoning deceased boxing legend and civil rights activist Muhammad Ali.

Trump said he was considering a number of other pardons too and said that the pardoning power was "a lovely thing" for presidents. "The U.S. Supreme Court overturned the conviction of Muhammad Ali unanimously in 1971".

Trump told reporters before departing for the G7 summit in Charlevoix, Que., he's looking at "thousands of names" of people who could be granted clemency.

Ali is one name on this list.

As field for California governor narrows to two, Democrats plot strategy
California's unusual primary system allows the top two primary candidates to advance to the general election, regardless of party. Ed Royce and Darrell Issa , and the district where Republican Dana Rohrabacher was facing challenges from the left and the right.

Trump said that he wasn't thinking about pardoning either man, as neither has yet been convicted of a crime.

Trump already has granted a posthumous pardon to boxing's first black heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson, more than 100 years after many saw as his racially charged conviction. "And some others and some folks whose have sentences that aren't fair".

Ali's pardon would be for a draft-evasion conviction, that results from his refusal to enter the military during the Vietnam War. Last week, the president said he was considering pardoning Martha Stewart and commuting the sentence of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Trump has reportedly become increasingly "obsessed" with pardons and enjoys talking about potential pardons with aides, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.
