Flood watch in effect for South Florida as Subtropical Storm Alberto heads north SUNDAY UPDATE: Alberto’s Impacts to the Tennessee Valley

As Subtropical Storm Alberto continues to swirl in the southern Gulf of Mexico, it could have an impact on the weather in Middle Tennessee.

Sunday afternoon and evening are expected to bring heavy rain and winds between about 15 and 18 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service in Charleston. The weather had scared off the usual crowds expected for the holiday weekend.

The National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Florida, announced the area has an "elevated" risk for isolated tornadoes during a Sunday afternoon briefing.

You'll likely have to adjust those weekend grilling plans for this Memorial Day weekend: As Subtropical Storm Alberto makes its way north through the Gulf of Mexico, sloppy, wet and potentially risky conditions are expected through Monday.

A tropical storm warning expired for Cuba's western Pinar del Rio province, where heavy rains could trigger flash floods and mudslides, the National Hurricane Centre said.

The main difference between a tropical storm and a subtropical storm comes down to the structure.

On Sunday night, a broken line of thunderstorms is expected to move into the Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties. Only.13 inches had fallen at the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport through 5 p.m. Saturday, but almost 6 inches has fallen so far this month, about three times the normal amount.

Winds along the coast are forecast to be around 40 to 50 miles per hour.

Due to the higher humidity, and some moisture being drawn up from Alberto, any storm that does develop will produce heavy, localized rainfall. However, there is a low chance for spotty showers across our western and northern zones.

Please be prepared for possible areas of flooding and loss of electricity.

A subtropical storm like Alberto has a less defined and cooler center than a tropical storm, and its strongest winds are found farther from its center.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott issued a state of emergency on Saturday for all 67 counties in his state.

Cuba is expected to get as much as 15 inches of rain, the hurricane center said in an advisory Saturday, and the Florida Keys and South Florida could get as many as 10 inches. The tropical system became a subtropical storm Friday, the hurricane center said.

Alberto should push through the region by Monday evening, said, Corless said.

The National Weather Service cautioned on Sunday morning that there is still uncertainty over the forecast track, and those along the coast from Alabama to Florida need to keep a close eye on the storm.
