A bombshell investigation by BBC News has revealed that the Ukrainian government paid Trump "fixer" Michael Cohen $400,000 to arrange talks between it and President Donald Trump.

Yellow cab magnate Evgeny "Gene" Freidman, the so-called Taxi King of NY, pleaded guilty to a single count of tax fraud in an Albany courthouse, nearly a year after state prosecutors and tax authorities charged him with pocketing $5 million in mandatory, per-ride transportation fees.

Freidman, known as New York's "Taxi King", was indicted on state charges previous year by then-New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who alleged Freidman and others failed to pay $5 million in MTA surcharges between 2012 and 2015.

Cohen and Freidman have collaborated in the taxi trade for years, forming a partnership so strong, Cohen allowed Freidman to continue managing his cab business "even after New York City regulators barred Mr. Freidman last year from continuing to manage medallions", the Times reports.

Freidman's cooperation agreement could be a significant development for Cohen, whose personal business practices are under investigation by the USA attorney for the Southern District of NY.

He had been accused of failing to pay more than US$5 million (S$6.7 million) in taxes.

Faced with the fact that friends of Cohen's have said he is absolutely devoted to the president and is committed to never turning on him, Avenatti noted that many people in Cohen's position say that initially.

But asked if he was cooperating with the authorities, Mr. Freidman would not respond.

A Chabad house in Long Island has once again made headlines as a hinge point for contacts under scrutiny by Robert Mueller III, the United States special counsel investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Federal prosecutors have sought records related to loans that Michael Cohen took out against his taxi business.

Sater is a convicted criminal associate of the Russian mob in NY and co-led Bayrock-Sapir, a real estate firm closely associated with Trump, to which Trump turned in his exploration of potential construction contracts in Moscow. After he filed, the New York District Attorney opened an investigation on him for unpaid taxes.

Cohen continued to deny a partnership in his tweet, writing that he is "one of thousands of medallion owners who entrust management companies to operate".

Around the same time, ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft began to dominate the NY livery scene and yellow-cab medallions rapidly lost value.

Federal agents raided Cohen's offices and home last month, after federal prosecutors in Manhattan obtained a search warrant.

"Today the "Taxi King" admitted that he built his empire by stealing from New Yorkers", Underwood said in a statement.

State prosecutors said Tuesday that Freidman, who operated 800 taxis between 2012 and 2015, failed to remit a 50-cents-per-ride tax owed to the state.
