Pompeo: 'Bad deal' with North Korea is not an option

Meanwhile, regarding the summit slated for June 12 between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump, Trump said Tuesday the meeting - the first ever between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader - could be called off unless "certain conditions" are met.

Seoul is seeking to mediate between the United States and North Korea, with President Moon Jae-in visiting Washington on Tuesday to urge Mr Trump to seize a rare opportunity to meet Mr Kim.

In their most recent meeting two weeks ago, Pompeo said he and Kim talked about their mutual goals for the talks.

The last time we took a look at the Korean peninsula, North Korea abruptly ended discussions with South Korea and is threatening to cancel the upcoming summit with the United States.

For Washington, this will involve considerable sanctions relief, dropping regime change as a long-term USA objective, and normalizing relations with the North once the entirety of its nuclear weapons - including all of the centrifuges, research documents, testing sites, and plutonium facilities - are packed up and destroyed to America's satisfaction. The outline of a prospective agreement with the North is not a mystery.

The demolition has been billed as a goodwill gesture but may be delayed by bad weather. "I'm very hopeful that meeting will take place".

For his part, Moon tried to disperse the US skepticism regarding the Trump-Kim meeting.

"While the U.S. has instinctive resistance against the North, it will realize that I'm not the type of person who would use nuclear weapons on the South, the Pacific or the U.S.", Kim told Moon at their April 27 summit.

"Our posture will not change until we see credible steps taken toward the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean peninsula", he said.

Pompeo, who was director of the Central Intelligence Agency under Trump before becoming secretary of state in April when the president fired Rex Tillerson, has met twice with Kim in Pyongyang. His spokeswoman, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said Trump was referring to a commitment to seriously discuss denuclearization.

How did the mood sour last week?

Pompeo said a USA -led sanctions pressure campaign on Pyongyang would not be eased until North Korea gives up nuclear weapons and that the United States had no intention of making concessions to Pyongyang.

The North also threatened to abandon the planned Mr Trump-Kim meeting over USA insistence on rapidly denuclearising the peninsula, issuing a harshly worded statement that the White House dismissed as a negotiating ploy. He added that the Singapore summit, if it occurs, "could lead to significant detente on the Korean Peninsula and a path to economic revival of the North".

Earlier in the day, Chung Eui-yong, South Korea's national security adviser, expressed optimism about the continued prospects for the meeting, telling reporters during the flight to Washington, "We believe there is a 99.9 per cent chance the North Korea-US summit will be held as scheduled".

Citing sources familiar with the preparations, The Washington Post reported Tuesday that Kim was less concerned about meeting Trump than he was about what might happen at home in Pyongyang while he's gone.
