Iran's People Will 'Punch Pompeo in the Mouth': Iranian Official

With a speech on Monday, secretary of state Mike Pompeo filled in details of an Iran strategy that has so far consisted of walking away from the 2015 accord that restricted the country's nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of some economic sanctions. US experts said their country is making a full-on effort to force Iran's hand.

"In recent months Iran has flown an armed drone and launched a salvo of rockets into the Golan Heights from Syria against Israel, our steadfast ally, which has asserted measures of self-defense and the United States will unequivocally support". It will not have the resources to do both ...

It was a pointed response to Pompeo's speech earlier in the day, in which he threatened the "strongest sanctions in history" against Iran unless it capitulated to a series of 12 demands regarding its regional behavior and missile program. Their governments could continue their agreement with Iran, but risk running afoul of US sanctions.

Pompeo vowed Trump's approach would ensure Iran would never develop a nuclear weapon.

Declaring the era of U.S. domination "over", he added, "we will continue our path with the support of our nation". "The priority is that the JCPOA should work first and then we can hold talks", the Iranian diplomat said.

The EU is not mincing any words, fearing that the trade flow with Iran would drop sharply and the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker made specific reference to small and medium-sized companies as they are deemed to be less vulnerable to USA sanctions compared to the large EU firms who conduct business in the U.S. or who use American parts such as Airbus.

"Pompeo has not outlined a strategy, but rather a grab bag of wishful thinking that can only be interpreted as a call for regime change in Iran", said Suzanne Maloney, an Iran expert at the Brookings Institution.

Mr Pompeo has made clear he expects the backing of his allies in Europe but also called for support from "Australia, Bahrain, Egypt, India, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Korea [and] the UAE". Airbus signed a contract to sell Iran 100 airplanes and only three jets arrived in Tehran's airport as part of this historic deal which the company announced its cancellation.

If Iran wants to escape sanctions, it must comply on a range of issues that go beyond its nuclear ambitions. "Are we to negotiate with the ones who renege on official agreements approved by the UNSC?" he said.

"US diplomacy sham is merely a regression to old habits: imprisoned by delusions & failed policies-dictated by corrupt Special Interest-it repeats the same wrong choices and will thus reap the same ill rewards", Foreign Minister Zarif tweeted.

"Americans think they own the world. The global community expects all sides to keep the commitments they made more than two years ago", she added. "And one can not help but think that is the strategy and the goal". The leading opposition coalition, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), has consistently insisted that neutralizing the threat of the Iranian nuclear program would require the change of the Iranian regime by the Iranian people. Nearly all big companies which made deals with Iran are withdrawing quickly despite the possible losses they may suffer. On Sunday, Iran's foreign minister, Javad Zarif, said the European Union's "political will is not enough to preserve the deal". Are they not the most responsible for your economic struggles?

The prospects for future Iran will be further explored on June 30 at the major rally of the Iranian opposition near Paris, which annually attracts a crowd of over 100,000, including hundreds of supporters from political, academic, and security circles of the USA and Europe, the Middle East, and much of the world.
