His concern and even frustration that the leadership of the EP agreed to hold a meeting behind closed doors, was expressed by a number of parliamentarians.

The revelations that the data of some 87 million Facebook users and their friends may have been misused by the consulting firm that worked on Donald Trump's United States presidential campaign, has been called a game changer in the world of data protection as regulators seek to raise awareness about how to secure information.

Mr Zuckerberg, who has repeatedly apologised for the massive data breach, told the US Congress in April that the more stringent European Union rules could serve as a rough model globally.

The EU and British parliaments have been calling for Zuckerberg to appear before them for weeks ever since it emerged that a company, political consultants Cambridge Analytica, had been allowed to misuse the data of millions of Facebook users.

That suggests he will avoid an uncomfortable public appearance and instead meet only with the legislature's top brass behind closed doors.

As Vera Jourova, the European commissioner for justice and consumers, put it in a tweet, it's a pity the Facebook founder does not believe all Europeans deserve to know how their data is handled by his company.

The anonymised data of approximately 3 million Facebook users has reportedly been published on a poorly protected website.

The closed-door meeting with the Parliament's most senior deputies will anger European lawmakers who were hoping to give Mr Zuckerberg a grilling similar to his 10-hour interrogation in US Congress last month.

Tajani said that simply showing up to explain himself was already a good move.

"Given the deep mistrust caused by the scandal in Cambridge Analytica, this meeting should be public".

On Monday, Zuckerberg will also attend a meeting organized by French President Emmanuel Macron aimed at pressuring tech giants to use their global influence for public good. "It is a step in the right direction towards restoring confidence", he said.

It is the latest development in the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which saw the data of around 87m Facebook users worldwide collected by the firm.

Zuckerberg has so far declined to appear, to the British lawmakers' annoyance. He said that during the meeting, Zuckerberg will appear before the members of the LIBE committee and other relevant committees to carry out an in-depth analysis of various aspects related to personal data protection.
