Sheriff tells Trump: California sanctuary city laws are a "disgrace"

Trump has made his disdain for undocumented immigrants one of his key messages since the days of his campaign.

Sessions promised that prosecutions of criminal immigrants would likely double.

When attendees blasted Brown, who referred to anti-sanctuary politicians as "low-life" politicians, for not meeting with them, Trump said that "somebody said he is going to run for president". "You're putting them at greater risk", he said.

The commander-in-chief, who has never really shied away from insulting immigrants, was having a roundtable discussion with a group of California sheriffs when he made the deeply disturbing remarks conflating immigration with delinquency - because according to the current administration, everyone who entered the USA illegally is criminal, regardless of the large possibility they could have done it to flee violence and war in their home countries.

Some representatives from those regions were in attendance at Wednesday's roundtable, including San Diego County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar - who is running to replace the retiring Rep. Darrell Issa in Congress - and Los Alamitos Mayor Troy Edgar.

As Breitbart News reported, former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown said on Tuesday that Democrats should consider Brown as a 2020 presidential nominee.

"@realDonaldTrump is lying on immigration, lying about crime and lying about the laws of CA".

The Democratic governor added: "Flying in a dozen Republican politicians to flatter him and praise his reckless policies changes nothing". Trump has railed against the state repeatedly in public rallies, official comments and tweets. "We, the citizens of the fifth largest economy in the world, are not impressed".

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., accused Trump of "fanning the flames of division".

Feinstein issued a statement accusing the Trump administration of "once again attempting to divide Californians and all Americans with today's White House meeting". He said the state's sanctuary laws are interfering with his deputies' ability to work with federal agents to keep his community safe. "We're taking people out of the country". "Not the people who are seeking a better life in America".

"We have people coming in to the country, or trying to come in", Trump told California Republicans visiting the White House, "we are taking people out of the country".

Newsom said the president was "cherry-picking a few right-wing electeds from a state of 39 million people".

And he assured the sheriff the administration would continue working.

Addressing Attorney General Jeff Sessions and alluding to speculation about obstruction of justice charges against himself, Trump said, "You talk about obstruction of justice, I would recommend that you look into obstruction of justice for the mayor of Oakland, California, Jeff".
