The 36-year-old is now an assistant coach at Manchester City and has been heavily praised for his work there. Arteta's odds have shortened over the last week as Max Allegri and Luis Enrique have both become less likely.

Former Arsenal midfielder Arteta, who is now a coach at Manchester City, is the overwhelming favourite to succeed Arsene Wenger in the next few weeks, after the club finished the interview process.

Arteta, who has never managed a team, took up a role at City under manager Pep Guardiola in 2016.

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Čech has said continuity is a fundamental principle for the club's new manager who will take over from retiring Arsène Wenger.

After Arsenal's chairman, Sir Chips Keswick, was heavily booed at Arsene Wenger's last home game it is clear that more board control is the last thing Arsenal fans want. Bould and Lehmann have been offered positions, but it depends on the new manager's requirement of them. The others on the way out are first-team coach Neil Banfield, also with more than 20 years' service, goalkeeping specialist Gerry Peyton, fitness coach Tony Colbert and equipment manager Paul Johnson.

The 36-year-old is aware of the interest of his former club and is believed to be highly interested by the prospect of starting his managerial career with a top side.

Arteta meanwhile has reached the point in his negotiations with Arsenal where he has "named potential staff and the financial package required", and among the people he wants working with him is Santi Cazorla.

Will Arteta be the right choice to replace Arsene Wenger or will the decision backfire as it happened at Manchester United a few seasons ago with the David Moyes appointment?

They remain confident of naming a successor before the World Cup begins on 14 June.
