The new functionality was meant to silence auto-playing audio and video in the web browser, but it inadvertently muted audio from many web games and other projects too, with no way to get it back. The move was announced in a tweet by Myles Borins, a developer advocate at Google.

The aim is to give game and audio application developers more time to update their code before reintroducing the policy for the Web Audio API in Chrome 70, due out in mid-October. Some feel that Google is restricting the spirit of a free and open web buy forcing their standards on the world's most popular browser.

The new autoplay policy was considered a win for users who felt ambushed by noisy video ads and content. "The team here is working hard to improve things for users and developers", he said, "but in this case we didn't do a good job of communicating the impact of the new autoplay policy to developers using the Web Audio API".

The autoplay-video blocker is created to fix one of the greatest problems of the Internet: autoplaying videos on websites.

A good change in theory, the policies have negatively impacted games and other experiences (according to The Verge) that use the Web Audio API. This change does not affect most media playback on the web, as the autoplay policy will remain in effect for video and audio .

Not long after web-based game developers began complaining about broken audio in their products, a Chrome product manager said his team was processing the feedback and looking for solutions.

In its Chromium Bug Tracker (via Engadget), Google said it is has now chose to temporarily remove the auto mute Web Audio API.

Pallett said Google is rolling back the change made in Chrome 66 to give developers more time to properly react to the new system.

Google developer advocate Myles Borins confirmed yesterday that the audio pausing policy would be temporarily rolled back. This was after Google acknowledged the complaints from various web-users related to the auto-play ads which were not only bothering a user but also use up the hardware resources along with consuming a huge amount of data.
