Gigi Buffon Is Leaving Juventus, But He Hasn't Retired

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon announced on Thursday that he will leave the Turin giants after 17 years but did not as expected declare the end of his playing career.

"I'm convinced that Juventus needs to plan for the future and, as someone who has spent many years as a player and several as club captain, I am the first to understand that", Buffon told a press conference at the Allianz Stadium in Turin.

The 40-year old is yet to confirm he is retiring from the game though, revealing that he has offers on and off the pitch and expresses his pride at receiving those proposals. He played five World Cups, helping Italy lift the trophy in 2006 and holds a record of 176 caps with the Azzurri.

Premium Sport suggests that Liverpool are waiting to pounce if that proves to be the case, offering the former Parma shot stopper a chance to experience life outside of his homeland.

And Veronica said space had not yet been made for the one he will wear for his final game expected to be Saturday when he makes his 640th and final Serie A appearance against Verona.

It seems an appropriate time for Buffon to retire, having previously stated he would walk away at the end of the season unless Juventus won the Champions League - a dream that was crushed in dramatic fashion at the quarter-final stage after he was sent off for a foul in the area and Real Madrid converted the resulting last-gasp penalty.

Italy's most capped player with 176, Buffon could make his worldwide farewell on June 4 in a friendly against the Netherlands.

"I really don't think it's time for goodbye", Veronica Buffon said.

"I make this decision in a calm and happy state of mind, which is not to be taken for granted for a sportsperson".

"What am I going to do?"

"If I decide to continue it will be to fight for big things, because that's what I live for". Gigi's eyes don't give me the feeling he wants to stop. The day I can't, no problem.

Despite previously having opportunities to test his skills in other areas of the world, Buffon turned them down and admits it is a slight regret when reflecting on his career.
