Peru captain to miss World Cup after doping ban extended

Peru's preparation for the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup [VIDEO] suffered a major hitch after their captain Paolo Guerrero lost an appeal for a failed doping test. Guerrero is facing a World Cup ban as a result.

Given this summer will be Peru's first World Cup since 1982 and that Guerrero is 34, the achievement of securing a World Cup berth was made all the more valuable-and the disappointment of not being able to go all the more painful.

Guerrero was subjected to an emotional roller-coaster after testing positive following the 0-0 draw in a qualifier away to Argentina in October.

It has now been extended to January after the CAS upheld an appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Despite acknowledging Guerrero had no intention of taking a banned substance - his lawyer argued the stimulant was consumed by drinking contaminated tea - CAS ruled in line with WADA's wishes.

The centre-forward has also previously represented Bayern Munich - scoring 13 times in 44 appearances for the German giants between 2004 and 2006 before leaving for Hamburger SV.

The footballer's ban lapsed this month, but on Monday (NZT Tuesday) the court ruled Guerrero would now serve a 14 months suspension - an "appropriate sanction in light of Mr Guerrero's degree of fault".

Peru is in Group C with Australia, Denmark and France.

The Dutch-based union pointed out the CAS itself had accepted that Peru's all-time leading scorer did not intend to enhance performance and had not knowingly ingested the substance.

Guerrero had played two games for his Brazilian club Flamengo, scoring in Sunday's 3-2 defeat against Chapecoense in the Brazilian championship, between the end of his original ban and the CAS verdict on Monday.

In December, FIFA handed Guerrero a 12-month ban, ruling him out of the World Cup. It ended on May 3, making Guerrero eligible to play at the June 14-July 15 World Cup in Russian Federation. They questioned the CAS's intentions for the ban despite admitting that Guerrero was not significantly negligent and his intention was not to enhance his performance.

Bolivia fielded an ineligible player in a 2-0 win over Peru, and that result was overturned to a 3-0 loss by default.
