An officer who failed to intervene after a gunman opened fire at a high school in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 and injuring another 17, has been granted a pension of US$8702 (A$11,575) a month.

Broward County Sheriff's Deputy Scot Peterson now receives over eight thousand dollars a month in pension despite his failure to act during February's tragic school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

The pension amounts are figured via a formula from his regular salary plus overtime; the Sun-Sentinel reports he received $101,879 in the last year of his 32 years of police service.

"This infuriates me in ways people can not comprehend", the grieving father tweeted.

The former Deputy was thrust into the national spotlight after surveillance footage emerged of Peterson taking a "defensive position" and refusing to enter the high school as Nikolas Cruz gunned down students at will. "My daughter would still be alive if this person did his job", Fred Guttenberg, whose 14-year-old daughter Jaime was among 17 people shot dead inside the Parkland, said on Twitter.

After the shooting, Peterson said in a statement that he heard gunshots but believed that they were coming from outside of the school and not inside the building where the shooting took place.

U.S. President Donald Trump also called Peterson a coward. That money should go to actually securing our schools!

Scot Peterson had served as the school resource officer within Stoneman Douglas High School and received glowing reviews before the February 14 shooting, the report noted.

Facing disciplinary action from the Broward County Sheriff's Department, Peterson opted to resign and retire on February 23, just 9 days after the shooting.

"This guy is a disgrace", Pollack told the Sun-Sentinel.
