Common cold cure on horizon after new drug successfully kills multiple strains of the virus
15 May, 2018, 21:28
But if we're lucky, that might not be the case for much longer. The researchers have made a molecule that has shown to the ability to block the multiple strains of the most common cold virus, rhinovirus.
We often talk about the common cold like it's one illness caused by one germ, but in reality, a cold can be triggered by nearly 200 different viruses.
The new treatment developed at London's Imperial College blocks the protein, cutting off the infection at an early stage.
But the new approach could be more successful because it does not target the virus directly.
To replicate inside their host, viruses hijack a protein in human cells called N-myristoyltransferase (NMT), which they use to construct a capsid (shell) for protecting their genetic structure.
All strains of the virus need this same human protein to make new copies of themselves, so the molecule should work against all of them.
This hijacking behaviour isn't unique to rhinovirus.
The molecule was initially discovered when searching for a way to take on malaria parasites.

While an uncomfortable nuisance for the vast majority of people, the common cold can be life-threatening for those living with serious illnesses and immune deficiencies.
By inventing a novel way to combine the two, they created a molecule, codenamed IMP-1088, which is more than a hundred times more potent than previous molecules targeting the protein in humans.
"There is a still a long way before this becomes a medicine".
"A drug like this could be extremely beneficial if given early in infection, and we are working on making a version that could be inhaled so that it gets to the lungs quickly", he added.
In addition, there's a chance the compound, if shown to be safe, could end up treating other conditions that also complicated by rhinovirus - such as asthma and cystic fibrosis.
