Punjab Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi on Tuesday congratulated Local Government, Cultural Affairs and Tourism Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on his acquittal in the 1988 old rage case.

This judgment was delivered by a Division Bench comprising Justice Jasti Chelameswar and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul a month after it was reserved on April 18 this year.

The road rage incident dates back to December 27, 1988, when Sidhu had allegedly punched one 65-year-old Gurnam Singh in Patiala, Punjab, resulting in the latter's death.

Reversing the High Court ruling, the apex court acquitted him of the serious charge of culpable homicide in the 1988 case.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court, however, had later reversed that order, finding him guilty under Section 304 Part II of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Senior advocate R S Cheema representing Sidhu, had questioned the evidence brought on record by the prosecution, saying "the most baffling and disturbing issue in the case is what we have on record with regard to the cause of death".

From Karnataka Election Results 2018 to Punjab Tourism Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu's conviction, it seems like Tuesday was a bad, not so good and a awful day for the Congress.

The bench of justices, however, found him guilty of causing simple injury and charged him Rs 1000 without any jail term. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead.

Sidhu then beat up Singh. There is not a single evidence that suggests that the cause of death was a cardiac arrest and not brain haemorrhage.

The apex court's verdict came on the appeal filed by Sidhu, who had quit the BJP and joined the Congress days before the Punjab Assembly elections a year ago, and Sandhu, challenging the high court's 2006 judgment convicting them.
