Lars von Trier warned his fans that "The House That Jack Built" would be his most brutal and violent offering to date, and the movie's first official trailer suggests the director won't have a problem making good on that promise.

The movie features actors Matt Dillon, Bruno Ganz, Uma Thurman, Siobhan Fallon Hogan, Riley Keough, and Jeremy Davies.

We're spare the details, but consistent women and child mutilation are not off the menu, neither is the suffering of a poor duckling, a younger Jack seen pinching off one its feet before releasing it back into the lake to watch it struggle to swim away.

Seven years ago, Lars von Trier was drummed out of Cannes for joking in a press conference that he sympathised with Hitler.

- Kyle Buchanan (@kylebuchanan) May 14, 2018I've never seen anything like this at a film festival. There are several graphic scenes of misogynistic torture and mutilation in The House That Jack Built - although I've seen a lot worse in supposedly mainstream USA thrillers - but I suspect that more people will be put off by the lengthy seminars than they will by the sadism and gore.

Critical response to The House That Jack Built has been largely negative. Also giving the film two stars was the Telegraph's Robbie Collin, who wrote it "feels like way too much and nowhere near enough", while, in an F-grade review, The Playlist's Jessica Kiang described it as "misogynistic" and "irredeemably unpleasant".

The story follows Jack, played by Dillon, a serial killer who views his murders as elaborate works of art.

Not everyone seems to have been appalled by The House That Jack Built, however. He views each murder as an artwork in itself, even though his dysfunction gives him problems in the outside world. Despite a large number of viewers departing the screening early due to being unable to stomach the narrative of the film, the director still received a 10-minute standing ovation for the movie. As the inevitable police intervention is drawing nearer, he is taking greater and greater risks in his attempt to create the ultimate artwork.
