John Oliver mocks AT&T for paying Michael Cohen to 'understand' Trump's thinking

Oliver took particular issue with the name of the shell company allegedly used by Cohen to receive the payments: Essential Consultants, LLC.

The three senators have 16 questions for Stephenson about who at AT&T set up the contract with Essential Consultants, what its timeframe was, how the payments were structured and who proposed them, and how AT&T determined that Cohen "was qualified to advise on policy matters".

Last week we were handed another example of everything that is wrong with Washington D.C. In this instance it is Donald Trump's attorney, Michael Cohen and the payments he received from corporations.

In Trump's Washington swamp, the shit just keeps getting deeper.

Even though Cohen couldn't persuade Uber, he was successful in getting both pharmaceutical company Novartis and telecom giant AT&T to give him money in exchange for access to the president - and both companies have since acknowledged that paying Cohen anything was a massive mistake.

Novartis said in a statement last week that special counsel Robert Mueller's team had contacted the company in November 2017 about his deal with Cohen's Essential Consultants, and that it had "cooperated fully" and "provided all the information requested".

"Millions of dollars for access to Trump", Oliver said, "which is just freakish because I naturally assumed you gained access to the president by finding a golden ticket in your Maga hat".

In a letter to Cohen, Wyden stated that "the size and timings of these payments, as well as the accusation that Novartis continued the payments because canceling the contract "might have caused anger" to the President, deserve closer examination". Specifically, they want to know how much AT&T paid Cohen's firm, as well as, which executives were involved in hiring Michael Cohen, and what the decision-making process was like in vetting Cohen's qualifications for the job he was hired to do. "Congratulations, you just got a fucking master class". With his former boss installed in the White House, Trump's personal lawyer and fixer began pitching himself to major companies as an invaluable political consultant-"I have the best relationship with the president on the outside, and you need to hire me", he reportedly told prospective clients.
