The Trinidad & Tobago Football Association, which announced the news of Samuel's death, said the collision occurred after he had dropped his children at school.

ENGLAND, The former Esteghlal defender Jlloyd Samuel died in a auto crash in the north west of England on Tuesday morning, the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association have announced.

We've received some awful news that former National defender and ex-Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers player Jlloyd Samuel died in a auto crash this morning in England.

Merson played alongside Samuel for four years at Aston Villa between 1998 and 2002 and was understandably shocked at the news.

Despite being born in Trinidad and Tobago, Samuel grew up in London, where he joined Charlton Athletic, then moved to Aston Villa in 2007.

Samuel finished playing top-level football in England back in 2011, moving to Iran, but returned to play non-League in Cheshire as recently as this season.

"Sadly the driver of the vehicle, Jlloyd Samuel, 37, from Lymm, died at the scene", they said in a statement.

The 37-year-old made close to 200 appearances for Villa and also represented Bolton Wanderers and Cardiff City.

"His next of kin have been informed and are now being supported by specially trained officers".

He went on to play for Trinidad and Tobago's senior team.

"We've received some awful news that former National defender and Ex-Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers player Jlloyd Samuel died in a vehicle crash this morning in England", read a statement on the official Facebook page of the Trinidad and Tobago FA.
